A medical practitioner, Dr Akinlawon Olamide, has advised families to put proper healthcare arrangements in place for elderly parents, particularly as many adults struggle to combine caregiving with work and raising their own children.
Olamide, the Medical Coordinator at Victoria Island Medical Centre, OneHealth by AXA, said caring for older relatives goes beyond hospital visits. He noted that families may also need to manage medications, medical appointments, specialist consultations and existing health conditions.
He explained that ageing often brings more complicated health needs, especially among people living with chronic illnesses. According to him, routine medical checks and preventive care can help detect changes early and allow families to respond before conditions become emergencies.
The doctor also stressed that geriatric care should consider an elderly person’s overall wellbeing, including mobility, nutrition, cognitive health, medication use and emotional needs.
Olamide urged families not to wait until an elderly relative becomes seriously ill before planning their healthcare. He said a well-organised care plan can help older adults maintain their independence, manage existing conditions and enjoy a better quality of life.
He disclosed that the Victoria Island Medical Centre has introduced a geriatric wellness package offering medical assessments, wellness evaluations, laboratory tests, cancer screening, social support assessments, consultations and telemedicine services.
