The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State, Chief Uche Nnaji, has promised to rebuild markets affected by demolitions and provide free shops for displaced traders if elected governor in 2027. He said the proposed intervention would help affected business owners return to trading and restore their sources of livelihood.
Nnaji made the pledge while receiving a delegation of interest groups at his campaign office in Enugu. The delegation included traders and artisans affected by the demolition of Gariki Market, alongside representatives of northern communities and interfaith groups, who raised concerns about the difficulties they face in securing business spaces and coping with multiple taxation.
The PDP candidate said his proposed administration would review the circumstances surrounding the demolitions and work towards constructing replacement markets. He stated that the intention was to allocate shops to their original owners without charge, although he acknowledged that a phased arrangement involving minimal payments might be considered if necessary.
On the economy, Nnaji promised to review the state’s tax system and eliminate what he described as excessive levies on businesses. He also outlined plans to promote industrial development in sectors including oil, cement, iron ore and steel, saying investment in these areas could create jobs and expand economic opportunities for residents.
The candidate further pledged to introduce free healthcare for elderly citizens and run a government based on transparency, accountability and public participation. The promises form part of his proposed agenda for the 2027 governorship election, with their implementation dependent on his election and the resources available to a future administration.
