The Enugu State Police Command has launched an investigation into separate incidents of violence reported during political gatherings in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.
The first incident occurred at Obuofia, where a gathering of members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress was disrupted by unidentified assailants. Police authorities said two people were injured during the incident.
A separate disturbance was also reported at St Joseph Primary School, Agbani, where a Peoples Democratic Party rally was reportedly disrupted, with canopies and chairs prepared for the event damaged.
The NDC said eight of its members were injured during the Obuofia incident. The party identified them as Onovo Donald Ekene, Ngene Godwin Madueke, Ogbodo Gloria, Onovo Victor, Maduabuchi Ugwu, Nnaemeka Nelson, Chinonso Nwagbara and Obinna Daniel Owo.
Following the incidents, the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation and identify those responsible. Police operatives were also deployed to the affected locations to prevent further disturbances and trace suspects.
The NDC described the attack as an attempt to intimidate its members ahead of the 2027 governorship election and subsequently petitioned the police and the Department of State Services over the incident.
The party’s governorship candidate, Christian Ohaa, said the NDC would remain committed to its campaign despite the reported violence and urged authorities to ensure the safety of citizens participating in political activities.
