Building and town-planning professionals who inspected the site of the recent building collapse in Enugu have identified poor construction practices and inadequate supervision among the factors behind the incident.
The four-storey structure collapsed on Sunday, resulting in one death and leaving several others injured. A team comprising officials of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners and the Nigerian Institute of Building visited the site on Monday to assess the remains.
The experts observed what they described as inadequate construction materials and a lack of proper professional supervision. They also raised concerns about weaknesses in the regulatory system governing construction activities in the state.
The professionals called for stronger enforcement of building regulations, including the National Building Code, and urged the state authorities to ensure that construction projects are supervised by qualified professionals.
They also warned that an adjoining structure could have been affected by the collapse and recommended that its structural condition be professionally assessed before it is considered safe for occupation.
