The Federal Government is set to broaden the reach of passenger train services in the North with plans to establish rail connections between Abuja and five additional cities.
The proposed expansion is expected to cover Kaduna, Zaria, Kano, Daura and Katsina, with operations projected to commence in January next year.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Olufunsho Adebiyi, announced the plan during the first convocation ceremony of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology in Zaria, Kaduna State.
He explained that the initiative was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s transport infrastructure and improve movement between major northern centres.
Adebiyi also noted that the development of the rail network would generate employment opportunities while supporting economic activities along the affected routes.
He urged transport-sector graduates to continue developing their professional and technical skills to position themselves for opportunities created by the government’s investments in the sector.
