The Abia State Government has received commendation for its efforts to improve eye-care services and upgrade facilities across the state.
The commendation followed an inspection of selected eye centres by officials of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria.
The team visited eye-care facilities at Arochukwu General Hospital, the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia, and Aba General Hospital to assess their facilities and equipment.
The board’s Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Obinna Awiaka, expressed satisfaction with the standard of the centres, noting that the improved facilities could encourage patients from neighbouring states to seek treatment in Abia.
The Administrator of the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, Dr Betty Emeka-Obasi, disclosed that the facilities had secured accreditation from the regulatory body.
She added that between 35,000 and 37,000 patients had received eye-care services at the centres within the past two years, while several communities had also benefited from screening exercises, free treatments and eye surgeries.
