Academic and non-academic activities are set to be disrupted across Lagos State-owned universities following an indefinite strike declared by four staff unions.
The unions involved are the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, and National Association of Academic Technologists.
Their Joint Action Committee announced that the industrial action would begin at midnight on Friday, October 2, after the Lagos State Government failed to implement agreements on salaries, allowances and welfare benefits. The affected institutions include Lagos State University, Lagos State University College of Medicine, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, and Lagos State University of Education.
The unions said they had given the government several deadlines and engaged in negotiations over the implementation of the 2026 agreements but were dissatisfied with the outcome. They are demanding payment of outstanding arrears from January to September 2026, implementation of agreed allowances and a 15 per cent Lagos-specific allowance to reflect the high cost of living in the state.
Other demands include the implementation of a previously promised 20 per cent salary increase and the provision of five Marcopolo buses for university transportation.
The unions said the strike would continue indefinitely until the Lagos State Government gives executive approval and fully implements the agreements reached with the workers. Meanwhile, the state government has said it is working to resolve the dispute and is awaiting approval for the release of funds.
