A United States-based non-profit organisation, Quantus Medical Foundation, has launched a health outreach programme targeting 600 female students across Abia and Enugu states, with a focus on personal hygiene, health awareness, self-confidence and personal safety. The initiative is designed to equip young girls with practical knowledge to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and future.
The programme, spearheaded by Nigerian-American physician Dr. Nnenna Ihekoromadu, began in Abia State before extending to schools in Umuahia and Enugu. It featured interactive health talks, question-and-answer sessions and the distribution of personal hygiene kits to participating students.
Speaking during the outreach in Aba, the Chief Medical Director of Aba General Hospital, Dr. Amaka Kamalu, encouraged the girls to maintain good hygiene, uphold their dignity and develop confidence in themselves. She also cautioned them against the use of skin-bleaching products and harmful social media influences, urging them to remain focused on their education and ambitions.
In a keynote lecture delivered on behalf of the foundation’s founder, Dr. Uzo Oguine urged the students to prioritise their health and speak up whenever they experience health challenges or abuse. She explained that the foundation’s patient liaison officers could assist them in navigating healthcare services and connecting with qualified medical professionals when necessary.
The initiative also seeks to encourage the girls to share the knowledge acquired with their classmates, families and communities. Organisers expressed hope that the programme would promote healthier habits, strengthen self-esteem and empower more young women to seek appropriate support when faced with health or personal safety concerns.
