Nigeria’s public health authorities have confirmed an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, prompting urgent surveillance and containment measures to prevent a possible spread of the deadly viral disease.
The announcement, made on October 20, 2026, has triggered investigations into the patient’s movements and possible exposure to other people. The infected woman reportedly travelled to Nigeria from Uganda and sought medical attention at a private hospital in Abuja before the infection was confirmed through laboratory testing. She has since been isolated and placed under medical care.
As part of the response, health officials have begun tracing 44 individuals who may have come into contact with the patient. The exercise involves identifying potentially exposed people, monitoring their health and taking appropriate action to limit the risk of further transmission.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, alongside the Federal Ministry of Health and FCT health authorities, is strengthening surveillance and urging healthcare facilities to promptly identify and report suspected infections. Medical workers have also been reminded to observe strict infection-prevention and control procedures when attending to patients with possible symptoms.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the infection and assess the risk to the wider population. Members of the public are advised to remain calm, maintain good hygiene, avoid spreading unverified information and follow official health guidance as efforts to contain the case continue.
