The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State chapter, has called on the state government to improve the welfare of medical doctors, stressing the need for better working conditions and adequate support for healthcare professionals. The association’s appeal comes amid wider concerns over staff shortages and the growing difficulty of retaining skilled medical personnel in Nigeria’s public health system.
The association emphasised that improved remuneration, prompt payment of entitlements and a conducive working environment are essential to ensuring that doctors can perform their duties effectively. It also highlighted the importance of providing functional medical equipment and adequate infrastructure across healthcare facilities.
The NMA’s concerns reflect a broader challenge facing Nigeria’s health sector, as medical professionals continue to seek better career opportunities and working conditions, including opportunities abroad. The association has repeatedly maintained that appeals to patriotism alone cannot address the problem without practical measures to improve doctors’ welfare and professional development.
Beyond salaries, healthcare professionals require reasonable working hours, sufficient staffing, safe workplaces and opportunities for further training. Addressing these issues would help reduce pressure on existing personnel while supporting the delivery of quality medical services to patients across Abia State.
The association is therefore urging the Abia State Government to treat doctors’ welfare as a priority in strengthening the state’s healthcare system. Improved conditions for medical personnel, alongside sustained investment in hospitals and other health facilities, would be important steps towards retaining skilled professionals and improving access to healthcare for residents.
