A Magistrate’s Court in Imo State has sentenced Rose Okon to six months in prison after she pleaded guilty to assaulting her 14 year old niece who was under her care.
The case was heard by Chief Magistrate C. J. Nkwoada, who handed down the sentence after the woman admitted to the offence. The court, however, gave her the option of paying a 50-thousand-naira fine instead of serving the prison term.
Court proceedings revealed that the incident occurred on September 19 in Umuneke, Ngor Okpala. Prosecutors presented photographs showing injuries sustained by the teenager, alongside statements obtained during the investigation.
The case followed a petition by the Stand For Humanity Foundation, which raised concerns over the alleged abuse and supported the process that led to the woman’s arrest.
The foundation’s president, Chidiebube Okeoma, said the conviction should reinforce the message that abuse of children carries legal consequences. He added that the organisation would continue campaigns aimed at raising awareness and protecting children in Imo State.
