The Senior Special Assistant to the Kogi State Governor on Cybercrime, Promise Emmanuel, has appealed for greater understanding between Christians and Muslims following a social media controversy over Friday prayers held on a roadway.

The controversy began after a video surfaced online showing a woman challenging Muslim worshippers who had spread prayer mats across a road while observing their Friday prayers.

Reacting to the incident in a Facebook post, Emmanuel acknowledged that using a public road for prayers could inconvenience other road users. He, however, said the situation should be viewed within the context of the large number of worshippers who sometimes attend Friday prayers and the availability of worship centres.

The governor’s aide also drew attention to practices associated with Christian evangelism, including preaching in public transport, visiting homes to preach without prior invitation and using loudspeakers in public spaces. He argued that such situations could equally inconvenience members of the public.

Emmanuel therefore called for a more tolerant approach to religious differences, stressing that Christians and Muslims must learn to accommodate one another while respecting the rights and comfort of other members of society.

He maintained that peaceful coexistence requires people of different faiths to recognise their shared humanity despite differences in religious beliefs.
