Basketball superstar LeBron James began what he has described as his final NBA season on a disappointing note after the Philadelphia 76ers fell 114-108 to the Brooklyn Nets in a pre-season encounter.
The 41-year-old made his first appearance for Philadelphia following his move from the Los Angeles Lakers in July. James joined the franchise for what he indicated would be his final contract in a professional career spanning more than two decades.
Despite the defeat, the four-time NBA champion delivered a respectable performance, recording 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and one steal in 18 minutes during the first half of the game.
James admitted that his new teammates would need more time to develop an understanding on the court, expressing confidence that the opening encounter would provide valuable lessons for the team ahead of the new campaign.
The former Lakers star featured alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, while Jaylen Brown led the scoring with 18 points. The Nets, however, maintained their advantage to secure victory.
James arrives in Philadelphia with an impressive record, having won four NBA championships across three previous franchises: the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers. He is also the league’s all-time leading scorer and is preparing for a record-extending 24th season.
His immediate objective is to help the 76ers end their 43-year wait for an NBA championship, with the team expected to use its remaining pre-season fixtures to strengthen its chemistry before the regular season begins.
