The Niger State Government has announced plans to clamp down on social media content creators accused of spreading false information capable of misleading the public and creating tension in society.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nuhu, disclosed the government’s position during an event organised ahead of the World Public Relations Forum scheduled to hold in Abuja in November 2026.

Nuhu expressed concern over the activities of individuals who use social media platforms to publish harmful or unverified claims. He said the administration of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago was determined to address the spread of misinformation and promote responsible media practices.

The commissioner also called on members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations to uphold professional standards and ensure that information shared with the public is accurate and credible.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Dr Abu Nmodu, warned that content creators who violate ethical standards through the dissemination of false information could face legal consequences. He urged the government and relevant stakeholders to work more closely with professional journalists and established media organisations.

The Niger State chapter of the NIPR also highlighted the forthcoming international public relations forum as an opportunity for communication professionals to exchange knowledge and strengthen their professional capacity.
