Nollywood has recorded a major milestone after the movie Black Market attracted 51,000 qualifying viewers to a single screening at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, earning a new Guinness World Records title.
The historic screening took place on Saturday, September 26, with thousands of film lovers gathering at the Lagos venue for the premiere. The organisers had targeted 50,000 viewers, hoping to surpass the previous benchmark of 43,624 people recorded during a 2015 screening of Felix Manalo in the Philippines.
Guinness World Records officially counted 51,000 viewers who met the requirements by remaining at the venue from the beginning of the movie until the end. Although Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat put the overall turnout at about 64,000, the official record figure was based on the qualifying audience.
The event featured a red carpet, music, food and games before the main screening, with several Nollywood stars and government officials also in attendance. The successful record attempt was met with celebrations and fireworks at TBS.
Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, Black Market is a crime thriller centred on five women involved in a cross-border smuggling operation whose lives are disrupted after one of their daughters is kidnapped. The film features actors including Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Lateef Adedimeji, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Susan Pwajok and Uzor Arukwe.
