Chief Executive Officer of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, has called on people of the South-East to become more actively involved in electoral politics, stressing that the region’s influence in community affairs must also translate into participation in decisions about government and public leadership.
Okonkwo made the appeal during the 10th anniversary celebration of De Pinnacle International Social Club in Abuja, where he was installed as the organisation’s patron. He observed that community members often invest significant energy in choosing town union leaders and traditional rulers but show comparatively less involvement in selecting governors, local government chairmen and other elected officials.
The airline executive urged residents to pay closer attention to the records, policies and credibility of candidates seeking public office. He explained that political participation should involve asking questions, assessing campaign promises and making informed voting decisions rather than allowing community influence to remain limited to social and cultural matters.
Okonkwo also encouraged the Igbo to look beyond state boundaries and strengthen connections with communities in Rivers, Delta and Cross River states. According to him, broader cooperation among people of Igbo heritage could help build stronger networks and improve the region’s collective participation in national affairs.
He clarified that his message was not a call for social clubs to become partisan political organisations. Instead, he urged groups such as De Pinnacle to use their relationships, resources and community influence to promote responsible citizenship and public service. He congratulated the club on its decade of existence and encouraged its members to expand their contributions to society in the years ahead.
