The Peoples Democratic Party’s deputy governorship candidate in Ogun State, Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, has expressed confidence that her principal, Oladipupo Adebutu, will emerge as the state’s next governor in the 2027 election, despite the controversy surrounding his absence from the candidate list published by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Sowunmi-Kolapo made the declaration in Abeokuta after Jumat prayers at the headquarters of the Nawair-ud-Deen Society, where Muslim leaders offered prayers for the success of the PDP ticket. She described recent political developments as indications that the opposition party remained firmly positioned to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming election.
Addressing concerns over Adebutu’s omission from the INEC list, the deputy governorship candidate maintained that she believed the development was an unintended error that would be corrected. She also expressed confidence in INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, saying she expected the electoral body to uphold its credibility and handle the matter professionally.
Sowunmi-Kolapo also dismissed the excitement reportedly expressed by APC supporters following the publication of the list, describing their reaction as premature. She insisted that the political situation did not determine the outcome of the election and maintained that the PDP remained confident of securing victory at the polls.
Meanwhile, leaders of the Nawair-ud-Deen Society expressed support for the PDP candidates and urged members of the Muslim community to back the ticket. The controversy surrounding Adebutu’s omission continues to generate political debate in Ogun State as preparations for the February 2027 governorship election gather momentum. INEC’s published list did not include Adebutu and his running mate, leaving the issue of their candidacy unresolved in the reported developments.
