Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has criticised supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing some of them of targeting Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso following the breakdown of their political alliance. He argued that the backlash against the two prominent opposition figures reflects dissatisfaction among party loyalists over their decision to pursue a different political path.
Sani made his position known in a post on social media, reacting to allegations attributed to the ADC that Kwankwaso’s support for Obi was driven by personal ambition and that the politicians were working in favour of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The former lawmaker maintained that Obi and Kwankwaso are experienced politicians with independent political identities and established support bases. He insisted that both men have the right to make their own political decisions, including choosing which parties or alliances to associate with.
He further warned against treating political parties as organisations where members must remain regardless of disagreements or changing circumstances. According to Sani, political associations should allow individuals the freedom to join or leave without becoming targets of hostility or personal attacks.
The comments have added to the debate over opposition unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political leaders and supporters continue to react to changing alliances. The dispute highlights the challenges facing opposition groups as they seek to build cooperation, manage competing interests and develop a strategy capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.
