The death of Taofeek Azeez, a 40-year-old man who died in police custody in Osun State, has triggered calls from his relatives for authorities to establish what happened during his detention.
Azeez was reportedly picked up by community vigilantes following allegations that he stole cocoa seeds in Agbeye, within Odo-Otin Local Government Area. He was later presented at the traditional ruler’s palace before being transferred to a police outpost.
The incident has attracted attention after a video emerged showing the man being paraded and allegedly assaulted by some community members before he was handed over to the police.
His brother, Fatai Alimi, said the family wanted a credible explanation for the death and urged the state police command to conduct a comprehensive investigation. The deceased reportedly had three wives and six children, while his aged mother also depended on him.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said preliminary information suggested that Azeez died by suicide in his cell a few hours after arriving at the station. The command said the officer responsible for monitoring the cell would be questioned as investigators work to establish the facts surrounding the case.
