The Nigeria Police Force has escalated its operation to rescue 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members and other passengers abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Imo State. The victims were reportedly taken around Umunoha on October 1 after armed men attacked vehicles travelling along the route.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Shehu Nadada, to take charge of the rescue mission. The senior police officer arrived in Imo with two Commissioners of Police and carried out an assessment of the situation and the efforts already underway to locate the victims.
Following the assessment, additional tactical personnel and operational equipment have been deployed to strategic areas believed to be relevant to the search. Security teams are also using intelligence-led methods to trace the suspected kidnappers and determine the location of the abducted persons.
The operation is being coordinated with other security agencies as authorities intensify efforts to secure the victims’ safe release and apprehend those responsible. Police authorities have assured the public that the search will continue until the abducted persons are accounted for.
Members of the public have been urged to remain calm and vigilant, while anyone with useful information about the victims or their suspected abductors has been encouraged to contact security agencies. Authorities say information provided to assist the operation will be treated confidentially.
