Authorities in Sokoto State have asked school administrators to intensify preventive measures against diphtheria and pay closer attention to the health of pupils and staff.
The directive was issued by the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education amid concerns over the spread of the infectious disease in parts of the country.
The ministry advised principals to ensure that students or workers who develop symptoms associated with diphtheria are identified quickly and taken to designated health centres for proper assessment.
Schools were also encouraged to reinforce basic hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and maintaining clean classrooms and other facilities.
The government further appealed to parents and guardians to make sure their children are up to date with recommended vaccinations, stressing the importance of immunisation in preventing the disease.
School authorities, teachers and students were urged to remain watchful and promptly communicate any suspected cases to health officials to reduce the risk of transmission within school communities.
