The Gombe International Airport is facing financial challenges as management works to increase passenger traffic, attract more airlines and develop new sources of income.
The airport’s Sole Administrator, Suleiman-Daniel Musa, said the facility currently handles between 250 and 400 passengers daily, while four airlines now operate scheduled services compared with two when he assumed office in March 2025.
Musa said the airport was being upgraded to accommodate additional airlines and expand its route network, with discussions ongoing with carriers interested in connecting Gombe to other parts of Nigeria.
He explained that despite a 32 per cent rise in internally generated revenue since he took over, the airport still depends heavily on government support because its earnings remain below its operating expenses.
According to him, management is therefore exploring additional commercial opportunities to transform the facility into a more sustainable government enterprise.
The ongoing renovation is expected to provide additional offices, improve passenger facilities, install a baggage conveyor system and address water and other infrastructure challenges. Management also hopes to position the airport as an aviation hub for the North-East.
