Tension has reportedly risen in Ebokiti Community, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, following the alleged arrival of armed security personnel amid a long-running boundary dispute involving communities in Delta and neighbouring Ondo State.
Community leaders alleged that personnel linked to the Nigerian Navy and the Ondo State Amotekun Corps entered the area on Friday, reportedly using a gunboat. The development is said to have caused fear among residents, with some people temporarily moving to nearby communities over concerns about possible confrontation.
The Itsekiri leaders from Ugbege, Ebokiti, Ekekporo and Ototo communities have called for urgent intervention by the Federal and state governments. They expressed concern that continued deployment of armed personnel could further heighten tensions and potentially turn the boundary disagreement into a wider security crisis.
The dispute is not new, as disagreements over territory around the Ondo-Delta boundary have previously generated tension. Earlier interventions by local government officials and other authorities were aimed at preventing confrontations, while calls have been made for the matter to be settled through legal and constitutional channels.
The community leaders have appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding while urging the governments of Delta and Ondo states to work with the Federal Government towards a peaceful resolution. They maintain that questions concerning territorial boundaries should be determined through established legal processes rather than through force or intimidation.
