Ugo Ugochukwu has ended the 2026 FIA Formula 3 season as champion, becoming the first American driver to win the prestigious single-seater series.
The Nigerian-American teenager completed the championship-winning campaign at the Madrid finale on Sunday, September 13, after finishing second in the Feature Race for Campos Racing.
Although Finland’s Tuukka Taponen won the final race, Ugochukwu’s runner-up result gave him enough points to overtake his closest title rival, Freddie Slater. The British driver finished eighth, leaving Ugochukwu with a 14-point advantage at the end of the season.
The championship victory capped an impressive year for the 19-year-old, who showed strong pace across several rounds and established himself as one of the leading prospects in junior international motorsport.
Ugochukwu had earlier demonstrated his title ambitions with victories in Melbourne and Silverstone. His Silverstone Sprint Race performance was particularly dominant, as he finished well clear of the rest of the field.
The road to the title was not without setbacks. Slater had taken control of the championship after the Budapest round and entered the summer break with an eight-point lead. By the time the drivers arrived in Madrid, Slater’s advantage had increased to 15 points.
Ugochukwu then produced a timely response at the final round. His qualifying performance put him in a strong position, while Slater’s difficulties left the championship increasingly open. The Campos driver maintained his composure in the Feature Race and secured the result required to complete the comeback.
Born in New York, Ugochukwu has Nigerian heritage through his mother, Oluchi Onweagba, who hails from Anambra State. His development has taken him through various levels of junior racing, including a spell with the McLaren Driver Development Programme.
The FIA Formula 3 title represents another important step in his ambition to reach Formula 1. While the championship does not guarantee a promotion to the top tier of motorsport, it strengthens Ugochukwu’s credentials as he continues his career.
With the 2026 season now concluded, Ugochukwu has not only secured his first major FIA championship but also created a historic milestone for American motorsport.
