Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said Peter Obi does not pose a threat to President Bola Tinubu or the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Umahi made the statement while discussing the growing political competition expected in the South-East ahead of the polls.
The former Ebonyi State governor argued that Obi is not the only presidential contender from the South-East, noting that several other politicians from the region are also seeking the presidency. Umahi said his comments should not be interpreted as an attempt to underestimate Obi or his political presence.
Umahi also expressed confidence that the APC could improve its performance in the South-East in 2027. He attributed the party’s weak showing in the region during the 2023 election to what he described as inadequate federal representation at the time.
According to the minister, he believes the situation has changed under the current administration, pointing to the appointment of South-East politicians to major federal positions. He said the region has received greater representation and that the government’s activities could influence political support in the next election.
The comments come as political parties and presidential contenders intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections. The South-East, where Obi won all five states in the 2023 presidential election, is expected to remain an important focus of competing political interests as parties prepare for the next polls.
