The Anambra State Government has brought fresh attention to the issue of outstanding workers’ payments by making public a financial approval involving more than N363 million.
The document shows that N363.381 million was approved as part of efforts to clear financial obligations involving former employees and pensioners of the state’s defunct Water Corporation and Environmental Protection Agency.
The payment forms part of an agreement reached between the state government and representatives of the affected workers following an out-of-court settlement in February 2024. The money was earmarked for payment through the state’s payroll system.
The disclosure comes as a disagreement continues over the financial liabilities inherited by the current administration. Former Governor Peter Obi has maintained that his administration left Anambra without outstanding salaries, pensions and other recognised debts.
The Soludo administration has consistently disputed such claims, pointing to various inherited obligations that it says have required government attention. The newly released document provides details of one such payment arrangement involving workers and pensioners of the two defunct agencies.
