Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has challenged the Federal Government’s claim that Nigeria is moving into a period of prosperity, arguing that many citizens are yet to experience meaningful relief from the economic difficulties.
Atiku made his position known while reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address, in which the President said the country had moved beyond the most difficult phase of his economic reforms and was now positioned for shared prosperity.
The ADC presidential candidate said economic growth figures would have little significance if households continued to struggle with food, transport, healthcare, electricity and other essential expenses.
He also questioned the impact of major government policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and tax reforms, saying Nigerians should be able to see clear improvements in their daily lives from the changes.
Atiku further raised concerns over insecurity, unemployment and the rising cost of production, arguing that economic recovery should be reflected in safer communities, affordable necessities and better living conditions.
He called for greater transparency in government spending and urged the administration to demonstrate how its economic measures were translating into tangible benefits for ordinary Nigerians.
