Women and young people in Enugu State are being equipped with practical agricultural skills through a training programme on Black Soldier Fly farming, an emerging approach that could create employment opportunities while helping to reduce the cost of animal feed. The initiative was organised by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council in Egede, Udi Local Government Area, with a focus on rural economic empowerment and sustainable agriculture.
During the two-day workshop, participants learned how to breed Black Soldier Flies, manage their larvae, harvest them and process the resulting material for use in livestock and fish feed. The larvae are rich in protein and can serve as an alternative ingredient in animal feed production.
Organisers explained that the farming method offers an opportunity to convert certain organic waste materials from households, markets and agricultural activities into useful resources. Beyond reducing waste, the approach could provide an additional source of income for small-scale farmers, entrepreneurs and rural households.
The programme also highlighted the potential of Black Soldier Fly farming to address some of the challenges facing livestock producers, particularly the rising prices of conventional feed ingredients such as soybean meal and fishmeal. By developing locally available alternatives, the initiative aims to support agricultural productivity and strengthen small businesses.
The council expressed hope that the knowledge gained would encourage participants to establish small-scale enterprises and explore new opportunities in animal feed production. The initiative is also expected to promote women’s economic participation, youth employment and more sustainable farming practices in rural communities.
