Abia State is preparing to host a month-long La Liga Week programme aimed at expanding sports development opportunities and strengthening ties with international football stakeholders.
Scheduled to run from November 26 to December 26, 2026, the initiative will feature activities organised in partnership with La Liga and its Spanish and Basque partners in Nigeria.
The programme is expected to provide a platform for closer collaboration between Abia’s sporting community and international football development organisations, with a focus on talent discovery, youth participation and the exchange of expertise.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced the development on Monday, October 12, during a media briefing at Government House, Umuahia, following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
The planned event aligns with the state government’s broader efforts to use sports as a driver of youth empowerment, social development and international cooperation. It is also expected to create opportunities for local stakeholders to explore partnerships that could improve the state’s sporting sector and support emerging talents.
