Security operatives have arrested five suspected members of a criminal gang allegedly linked to the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members in Imo State. The arrests followed coordinated intelligence-led operations aimed at tracking down those responsible for the attack and dismantling the criminal network behind the incident.
The operation involved personnel of the Department of State Services, the military and the Nigeria Police Force. The suspects were apprehended at locations in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State during operations conducted between October 10 and 14.
The abduction occurred on October 1 along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway, where armed men reportedly intercepted two buses conveying the prospective corps members to their assigned orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. The victims were subsequently rescued on October 7 during a joint security operation at Amakohia-Ubi village in Imo State.
Meanwhile, three other suspected members of the gang reportedly escaped during the security operations with gunshot injuries. Security agencies have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend the fleeing suspects as investigations continue into the abduction and the alleged activities of the criminal group.
The arrests represent a significant development in the ongoing investigation, with security agencies expected to establish the individual roles of the suspects and pursue appropriate legal action. Authorities are also continuing efforts to ensure that other individuals allegedly involved in the crime are brought before the law.
