The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Imo State University branch, has insisted that its ongoing strike will continue until outstanding welfare concerns and the implementation of the 2025 agreement are addressed by the relevant authorities.
The branch chairman, Stephen Oguji, made the position known during a press briefing in Owerri, urging the Imo State Government, the university’s Governing Council and management to intervene and resolve the dispute. The strike began on August 10, 2026, and the union warned that the prolonged shutdown was affecting students’ academic progress and the institution’s reputation.
Among the union’s conditions for suspending the action are payment of September and October salaries at the revised rate, a clear timeline for settling salary arrears from January to August, and the release of withheld salaries. It also wants outstanding postgraduate allowances, pension obligations and earned academic allowances addressed through written commitments with specific deadlines.
ASUU-IMSU further demanded the cancellation of examinations and postgraduate defences conducted during the strike, the establishment of a committee to organise elections for heads of departments, and assurances that members would not face victimisation for participating in the industrial action. The union also questioned the decision to commence second-semester examinations while the dispute remained unresolved.
Although the lecturers said they remained open to negotiations, they maintained that verbal assurances would no longer be sufficient without measurable action. They appealed to the state government and university authorities to reach a lasting agreement, warning that continued disruption could further damage the academic calendar and increase the hardship faced by students and their families.
