Niger Delta activist Gabriel Asabuja, popularly known as Gen Asabuja, has blamed what he described as insufficient political pressure from South-East leaders for the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu. He made the remarks during the World Igbo Day celebration in Umuahia.
Asabuja argued that governors, lawmakers and other influential political figures from the region could have mounted a stronger campaign for Kanu’s release. He alleged that some politicians were reluctant to take a firm position because of their individual political interests.
The activist, who openly expressed his support for Kanu, also appealed to Ndigbo to strengthen their unity and pursue issues affecting the region collectively. He said political differences and competing interests had weakened the ability of leaders and communities to present a common position on major issues.
Asabuja also weighed in on the debate over the identity of the Ikwerre people of Rivers State, maintaining that the Ikwerre are Igbo. He urged greater solidarity among communities he considers part of the wider Igbo identity.
His comments come amid continuing legal and political developments surrounding Kanu’s case. Kanu is serving a life sentence following his 2025 conviction on treason-related charges, while his family has been calling for his appeal to be heard and raising legal questions about the basis of his conviction.
