The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has urged residents to stop using busy roads and highways as skating grounds, citing the danger such activities pose to both skaters and other road users.
The warning followed concerns over young people moving on roller skates along areas heavily occupied by vehicles, creating situations that could easily lead to crashes or serious injuries.
LASTMA stressed that highways and other major traffic corridors are designed for vehicular movement and should not be used for recreational activities. It advised skating enthusiasts to choose designated and less hazardous locations instead.
Parents and guardians were also encouraged to monitor children who engage in skating and ensure they do not venture onto major roads. The authority said proper supervision could help prevent avoidable accidents.
It further advised those who skate for recreation to use safety gear, including helmets and protective pads, while urging motorists to remain watchful around areas where children may be engaging in such activities.
