The Nigerian naira recorded another decline against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market, raising fresh concerns about the local currency’s performance. Figures from the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that the naira exchanged at 1,334.72 naira to a dollar, compared with 1,333.65 naira recorded in the previous trading session.
The latest movement represents a loss of 1.07 Naira against the dollar in one day, reversing the marginal improvement recorded earlier in the week. The development highlights the continued fluctuations in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market as businesses and individuals monitor the cost of obtaining foreign currency.
At the parallel market, the exchange rate remained relatively stable, with the dollar selling for approximately 1,375 naira, unchanged from the previous day. The difference between the official and parallel market rates reflects the varying conditions across the country’s foreign exchange channels.
Despite the naira’s latest decline, Nigeria’s external reserves showed some improvement, rising to approximately 55.13 billion dollars as of October 20. The increase in reserves could provide support for foreign exchange management, although it does not automatically guarantee an immediate recovery in the value of the naira.
The currency’s performance remains important for the wider economy, particularly for import-dependent businesses and consumers who may face higher costs when foreign exchange becomes more expensive. Market participants will be watching subsequent trading sessions for signs of whether the naira can regain ground or continue its downward movement.
