Plans to establish a Federal College of Agriculture in Ohafia, Abia State, have taken a step forward following the introduction of a legislative proposal by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
The bill, which seeks to provide a legal foundation for the proposed institution, was read for the first time during Tuesday’s Senate plenary, chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Sponsored by the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, seeks to modify the existing agricultural research law to accommodate the proposed college in Ohafia.
A key provision of the proposal is the inclusion of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ohafia, in the Third Schedule of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act, Cap A12, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The proposed institution could create new pathways for agricultural education and practical training, particularly for young people seeking careers in farming, agribusiness and related fields. It could also support agricultural research and provide skills needed to improve productivity and food production.
Beyond education, the project is expected to offer potential economic benefits to Ohafia and neighbouring communities through employment opportunities and increased economic activities if the college is eventually established.
For now, the bill must pass through the remaining legislative stages before it can become law. These include further consideration and approval by the National Assembly, followed by presidential assent.
The first reading marks the beginning of the process and does not amount to final approval for the college’s establishment. However, successful passage of the bill would provide the necessary legislative backing for the proposed federal institution in Abia North.
