Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has urged Igbo business owners to expand beyond conventional trading and take advantage of manufacturing, technology and digital platforms to grow their businesses.
Otti gave the advice in Umuahia during the Igbo Day Lecture and Dinner organised by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, where he stressed the need for the region’s entrepreneurs to adapt to changing economic realities.
The governor said increasing competition from foreign traders, particularly Chinese businesses, should encourage local entrepreneurs to focus more on producing goods and developing businesses that can compete effectively in both Nigerian and international markets.
He said the digital economy offered fresh opportunities for young Igbo entrepreneurs, noting that technology had made it possible for businesses and skilled professionals in the region to serve clients and companies outside Nigeria.
Otti also highlighted his administration’s TechRise initiative, saying some beneficiaries had secured international remote jobs while remaining in Aba.
He maintained that strengthening production, developing digital skills and supporting innovation would be crucial to achieving sustainable economic growth and creating more opportunities for people in the South-East.
