Workers in the public service have threatened to shut down operations in October if the Federal Government fails to respond to their concerns over the rising price of petrol and the worsening cost of living.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council said it could embark on a three-day warning strike beginning October 2, following the expiration of a deadline given to the government to address the workers’ demands.
The workers are calling for a reduction in the pump price of petrol to ₦500 per litre, as well as the payment of a wage award to help employees cope with the rising cost of essential goods and services.
They also want discussions on a new national minimum wage to commence ahead of 2027, arguing that early negotiations would allow sufficient time for an agreement to be reached and implemented.
The council said its affiliated unions had been directed to prepare for the proposed industrial action if the government fails to take concrete steps to resolve the issues before the strike date.
