The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has issued a final seven-day summons to officials of the six Federal Capital Territory Area Councils over unresolved financial issues contained in audit reports involving about N100 billion.
The summons followed the failure of the council chairmen to appear before the committee or send representatives to respond to questions concerning the alleged financial irregularities.
The committee directed the Directors of Personnel Management and Finance, alongside the Heads of Audit of Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali councils, to appear on October 14, 2026, warning that non-compliance could attract sanctions under the relevant service rules.
The audit report covering the year ended December 2021 identified about N7.65 billion in outstanding liabilities involving unremitted pension deductions, PAYE, VAT and withholding tax, as well as unpaid obligations to contractors.
The committee also demanded explanations and supporting documents concerning N24.87 billion reportedly spent by the six councils on personnel, overheads and capital projects in 2021. It further raised concerns over subsequent audit findings, including alleged revenue understatement, unauthorised disposal of assets and failure to submit financial accounts for 2023, 2024 and 2025.
