The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has urged Nigerians considering the Dangote Refinery Initial Public Offering to exercise financial discipline and avoid committing money meant for essential family needs.
Sanusi made the call on Thursday, September 17, 2026, while speaking at the refinery’s IPO investor roadshow in Kano. He encouraged Kano residents to participate in the share offering but stressed that investment decisions should not put their basic financial responsibilities at risk.
He warned potential investors against using funds reserved for children’s education, housing and other pressing obligations to acquire shares. According to him, only money that can be comfortably set aside should be committed to the investment.
The Emir also advised investors to adopt a long-term approach rather than purchasing shares solely to make quick gains from an immediate resale. He said people should be prepared to leave their investments untouched for a considerable period while monitoring their growth.
Sanusi said his interest was to see more Kano residents become shareholders in the refinery and take part in Nigeria’s capital market, noting that Nigerians should not miss opportunities to participate in major businesses through share ownership.
He explained that physical proximity to the refinery does not determine ownership of the company, stressing that shareholders are the individuals entitled to benefits arising from their stake in the business.
The former CBN governor commended Aliko Dangote for establishing the refinery and called on Kano residents to consider the IPO while ensuring that their participation is based on funds they can genuinely afford to invest.
He added that responsible investment requires balancing the pursuit of future returns with present financial obligations.
