Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone has revealed just how difficult life was before he became a global movie star, recalling a period when he had very little money and struggled to afford basic food.
Stallone said his financial situation was so severe that he survived on a simple diet that included cottage cheese and several raw eggs. He explained that he could buy a dozen eggs cheaply and would eat them with a small amount of cottage cheese because that was what he could afford at the time.
The actor also took on unusual jobs to stay afloat while pursuing his dream of becoming a successful writer and actor. Among the jobs he has spoken about was cleaning lion cages at New York’s Central Park Zoo, a task he described as particularly difficult.
His struggles continued even after he completed the screenplay for Rocky. At one point, Stallone said he was so broke that he had to sell his beloved dog because he could no longer afford to feed it. He eventually insisted on playing Rocky Balboa himself, despite offers from producers who wanted another actor in the role.
That decision ultimately changed his life. Rocky became a worldwide success and won the Academy Award for Best Picture, transforming Stallone from a struggling actor into one of Hollywood’s most recognised stars. His new memoir, The Steps, revisits the hardships, sacrifices and determination behind that remarkable rise.
