The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has expanded its operations in the South-East with the opening of a new regional office in Awka, Anambra State, covering both Anambra and Imo States.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, said the office is intended to work with state institutions and residents to strengthen financial systems and prevent the diversion of public resources. He stressed that the commission’s presence should not be viewed as an attempt to intimidate state governments, but as part of efforts to identify and close loopholes that allow financial leakages.
According to the EFCC, the Awka office has already handled hundreds of petitions since commencing operations in February 2026. The commission says its activities have so far resulted in convictions, financial recoveries and the recovery of several properties linked to investigations.
Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, welcomed the development and pledged the state government’s cooperation with the anti-graft agency. He said the administration would also explore areas where the EFCC could assist with improving revenue collection, taxation and capacity building for government officials.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, also called on the two states to make effective use of the new office. He said stronger cooperation between government institutions and the EFCC could contribute to greater transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
