Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has urged the South East Development Commission to prioritise major infrastructure projects, including a regional gas pipeline and an interconnected railway system, to accelerate industrial growth and improve economic activities across the five South-East states.
Mbah made the appeal while receiving the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, at the Government House in Enugu. The delegation was on an oversight visit to assess the commission’s programmes and development plans.
The governor said a high-pressure gas pipeline connecting major cities in the region would provide industries with more reliable energy supplies and encourage large-scale manufacturing. He also proposed a railway network linking Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, noting that improved rail transportation could ease pressure on roads, reduce travel difficulties and facilitate the movement of goods and people.
Beyond transportation and energy, Mbah called for stronger support for agriculture and technology-based businesses. He highlighted a 200-hectare integrated agricultural development project at Nomeh Unateze in Enugu State and urged the commission to establish funding opportunities for young entrepreneurs whose businesses are ready to expand.
The governor also appealed to the National Assembly to ensure adequate funding for the commission so it can deliver on its regional development mandate. In his response, Orji Uzor Kalu commended the Enugu State Government for providing temporary office accommodation and a permanent site for the commission’s headquarters, adding that the commission should focus on delivering tangible benefits to communities across the South-East.
