Healthcare providers in Nigeria have called on the government and relevant regulatory bodies to review the country’s health insurance framework, arguing that a stronger system is needed to shield citizens from the high cost of medical treatment.

The appeal comes as many households continue to struggle with healthcare bills, forcing some patients to postpone treatment or depend on personal funds to access medical services. Providers believe a more effective insurance system could ease this pressure and ensure that financial difficulties do not prevent people from receiving necessary care.

They stressed that expanding insurance coverage should be a major priority, particularly for informal-sector workers, low-income families and other vulnerable Nigerians who may not have access to employer-sponsored medical benefits.

The providers also pointed to the need for better implementation of existing health insurance policies. They argued that reforms must go beyond enrolment figures to guarantee that registered members can actually obtain medical services when they need them.

Another area requiring attention is the relationship between health insurance administrators and healthcare facilities. Stakeholders have called for improved coordination and prompt settlement of claims to enable hospitals and other providers to deliver services without unnecessary disruptions.

They further emphasised the importance of public education, noting that many Nigerians need clearer information about available insurance packages, registration procedures and the benefits of enrolling before medical emergencies arise.

The healthcare professionals maintained that effective regulation, sustainable funding and accountability would be essential to making the insurance system more dependable. They also called for measures to ensure that contributions made by individuals and employers translate into accessible and quality healthcare.

They urged the government to treat the reduction of direct medical expenses as a central objective of healthcare reform, warning that without meaningful improvements, the cost of treatment would continue to place considerable pressure on Nigerian families.
