The Abia State Government has identified seven major areas it believes can transform the state into a stronger industrial and investment destination.
The areas of focus are agribusiness and agro-processing, trade, manufacturing, the creative and digital economy, small and medium-sized enterprises, access to finance, and diaspora investment and innovation.
Governor Alex Otti disclosed the plan during the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce’s Meet the Governor Series in Lagos, where he outlined measures being taken by his administration to create a more favourable environment for businesses and investors.
According to the governor, Abia is seeking to move beyond its traditional commercial activities by developing sectors capable of generating employment, expanding local production and increasing economic opportunities for residents.
He said the administration was also investing heavily in infrastructure and other projects designed to reduce the difficulties faced by businesses. Among the initiatives highlighted were road construction, improved street lighting and the development of major economic projects across the state.
Otti further identified agriculture, livestock, dairy production, cocoa, cashew, rubber, garment manufacturing, ceramics, leather and tourism as areas with significant potential for private-sector investment.
The governor also listed the proposed Azumini-Obeaku Seaport, industrial park and medical city among projects expected to strengthen Abia’s economic base and create additional opportunities for investors.
The President of the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce, Abimbola Olashore, said Abia, particularly Aba, already had a strong entrepreneurial and manufacturing foundation that could be leveraged for broader industrial development. She, however, stressed the importance of predictable policies, infrastructure and effective institutions in attracting sustainable investment.
