Exercise your democratic right responsibly, peacefully and lawfully.

The Cross River State Police Command has urged members of the public to refrain from attacking, obstructing or resisting police officers while they are carrying out their lawful responsibilities.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, made the appeal in Calabar, stressing that officers routinely respond to emergencies, combat crime, protect lives and property and maintain public order.

Eitokpah said assaulting or violently resisting officers was an offence under Section 98 of the Police Act 2020. He noted that anyone convicted of such an offence could face a fine of ₦500,000, up to six months’ imprisonment, or both.

However, the police spokesperson clarified that members of the public still have the right to challenge unlawful conduct by officers. He advised citizens who experience alleged abuse, unlawful arrest or violation of their rights to seek redress through appropriate legal channels rather than resorting to violence.

He also called on police officers to uphold professionalism, discipline and respect for human dignity during interactions with citizens.

Eitokpah stressed that both the police and members of the public have responsibilities under the law, adding that protecting officers and safeguarding citizens should work together toward maintaining a society governed by law.
