A 25-year-old businessman has been arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu after operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, allegedly discovered cocaine concealed in his body.
The suspect, identified as Lovely Chukwulobelu, was intercepted while preparing to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Portugal through Addis Ababa. The NDLEA said he had ingested the drug and was subsequently placed under observation.
According to the agency, the suspect later expelled a total of 72 wraps of cocaine, classified as an illicit Class A substance. He was reportedly wearing his wedding ring at the time of his arrest, having returned to Nigeria recently for his wedding.
The NDLEA said preliminary investigations showed that Chukwulobelu previously operated a car-decoration business in Lagos before relocating to Portugal in 2023. The agency further alleged that he told investigators he became involved in drug trafficking to help offset expenses incurred during his wedding.
The arrest is part of wider anti-drug operations by the NDLEA across the country, with the agency reporting additional seizures and arrests in several states. Investigations into the Enugu case are continuing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged trafficking attempt.
