The upcoming Golden Globe Awards have rejected a request to classify Michael, the biographical film about late pop legend Michael Jackson, under the Musical or Comedy category. The decision means the movie is expected to compete in the Drama category unless its production company, Lionsgate, successfully challenges the ruling.
The film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in his feature-film debut as the King of Pop. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the production traces Jackson’s journey to international stardom, featuring recreations of some of his most celebrated musical performances.
The awards committee reportedly concluded that the film’s musical sequences did not satisfy the eligibility rules for the Musical or Comedy category. Under the Golden Globes’ guidelines, songs must contribute to advancing a film’s storyline, rather than serving primarily as performances or recreations of musical events.
Lionsgate still has the opportunity to appeal the decision before the October 31 submission deadline. If the ruling stands, the film and its lead actor will face competition in the drama categories, while supporting cast members Colman Domingo and Nia Long will remain eligible under categories that are not divided by film genre.
Despite the awards setback, Michael has recorded major commercial success, reportedly becoming the first biographical film to surpass one billion dollars at the global box office. The 84th Golden Globe nominations are scheduled to be announced on December 7, 2026, ahead of the awards ceremony on January 10, 2027.
