Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s 50th anniversary has triggered fresh discussions about the organisation’s relevance, leadership and ability to effectively represent the interests of the Igbo people in a changing society.
The golden jubilee was marked in Lagos with the presentation of a 602-page book examining Ohanaeze’s five-decade journey, challenges and future direction. The gathering brought together political figures, traditional rulers, business leaders and other Igbo stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, Abia State Governor Alex Otti called for institutional renewal, saying the anniversary should provide an opportunity to examine Ohanaeze’s past and consider how it can remain relevant to younger generations. He highlighted technology, innovation, diaspora engagement and economic development as areas requiring greater attention.
The Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, also urged the organisation to strengthen its grassroots connection and remain focused on its socio-cultural responsibilities rather than partisan politics. He argued that greater unity and a common agenda would strengthen the collective voice of the Igbo.
The anniversary has therefore become more than a celebration of five decades. It has opened renewed conversations about leadership, generational transition, unity, cultural identity and the need to build institutions capable of addressing the aspirations of Ndigbo in the years ahead.
