Abia State Governor has reiterated his opposition to the reinstatement of petrol subsidy, arguing that government resources should be directed towards productive sectors rather than subsidising fuel consumption.
during an interview with Arise Television on Friday, he discussed the economic implications of the subsidy policy and the reforms introduced by the Federal Government.
The governor said his position on subsidy removal predated the current administration, recalling that he had advocated ending the policy during the COVID-19 period in 2020.
According to him, subsidising fuel consumption encourages excessive use because consumers do not bear the actual cost of the product. He said government support should instead focus on boosting production and economic activity.
Otti acknowledged that removing the subsidy created immediate economic difficulties for Nigerians but maintained that reversing the policy would create further challenges for the country.
He also cautioned against allowing political considerations, particularly as the 2027 elections approach, to influence decisions on the petrol subsidy regime.
