The Lagos State Government has taken a new step in its campaign against gender-based violence with the introduction of a policy designed to tackle abuse through early prevention and community intervention.
The framework seeks to identify the social and environmental factors that can lead to sexual and gender-based violence, while encouraging timely action before cases escalate.
Speaking on the initiative, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said addressing reported cases alone was not enough to eliminate the problem.
She explained that the policy would promote public education, strengthen institutions involved in GBV prevention and improve the support available to survivors.
The programme also places attention on issues including consent, personal boundaries, digital safety and awareness, with the aim of equipping members of the public with information that can help prevent abuse.
The state government is expected to work with relevant agencies, communities and other stakeholders to implement the framework and strengthen access to legal, medical, psychological and other support services for people affected by gender-based violence.
